Art Journals

I have liked the idea of an art journal for a long time, even though I haven't been sure what I would actually put in it. After reading through Kelly Rae's Taking Flight, I decided it didn't really matter what I put in it, it was the fact that I made one. I pulled together some techniques I have been wanting to try from different sources. Carol Wingert over at Creatologie is doing a travel journal from an old book this month and I saw she had stitched the binding. I found the instructions for long-stitching online and grabbed an old copy of Gullivers Travels off my shelf. I chose it because the cover was colorful and a size I thought I could handle, and if anyone wants to read Gullivers Travels in the future I will happily buy another copy. This was getting rather dusty. Then I followed along with Kelly Rae and painted a girl on the cover. I think I should have done more with the background first but I liked all the colors so I just went with it and then added some paint around her head to cover up the title of the book. I used a couple of stickers, a Tim Holtz tag, and some painted grungeboard for the heart and the crown. I like her a lot. This was so much fun, I signed up for a Paulette Insall class to learn about background painting with acrylics. Wowee. Oh, and I'm taking another sewing class next Monday. So happy in the creativity thing right now, just trying it all out.
